Christkindlmarket’s origin goes back to the Middle Ages when farmers, tradespeople and artisans met around churches with song, food and small handmade gifts. In 1310, in Munich, Germany, it was called “Nikolausdult”. After the reformation of the church in the 16th century, Nikolaus, the gift giver, was replaced by Chriskindl (or Christ Child).
Christkindlmarkets became popular venues for selling toys and gifts. The festival is now celebrated all around the world.
Alderney Landing Community Cultural Centre is committed to being celebrated as a vibrant community gathering place and the heart of a dynamic Dartmouth experience.
