HMC Dockyard Controlled Access Zone

Members of the public, especially recreational watercraft users, reminded of Controlled Access Zone in Halifax Harbour alongside Her Majesty’s Canadian (HMC) Dockyard

Government of Canada-ordered Controlled Access Zones exist in several locations within Halifax Harbour. The purpose of these buffer zones is to ensure the safety and security of Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ships and visiting forces’ vessels as well as Department of National Defence (DND) facilities and Defence Team personnel who operate within these zones.

Recreational watercraft (e.g. boats, jet skis) have been observed encroaching on the defined Controlled Access Zone located in harbour waters alongside Canadian Forces Base Halifax’s HMC Dockyard property. This means that these private or rented watercraft are impeding on RCN/DND assets, both waterborne and on land.

Members of the public are reminded that entering the DND Controlled Access Zone alongside HMC Dockyard with personal or rented watercraft of any kind is prohibited. Persons and vessels who enter or exit this Controlled Access Zone without permission may, on the demand of a DND security team member, be required to submit to a search of their person or any property or thing under their control.

How to identify the HMC Dockyard Controlled Access Zone in Halifax Harbour

The Controlled Access Zone alongside HMC Dockyard is marked by bright white/orange or yellow buoys during the peak boating season (between the months of May and September). Although the buoys are not deployed during the off-season, October through April, it is important for watercraft users to be familiar with the HMC Dockyard Controlled Access Zone all year round in order to enjoy the recreational benefits of Halifax Harbour while respecting the safety and security requirements of our local Defence establishment.
