On August 10, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Halifax District RCMP, fire services and EHS responded to a report of a 64-year-old man lost in the woods near Pipeline Rd. in Head of St Margarets Bay.

Cst. Chris MacEachern, who was dispatched to the scene, first met with a man, known to the lost hiker at the trail head and used the location from a cell phone ping to begin a search on foot.

After hiking nearly 2 km, Cst. MacEachern was joined by a second RCMP officer and a police dog. The two officers eventually made verbal contact with the lost hiker and successfully located him through thick brush. The hiker, who was unable to walk, was carried by Cst. MacEachern through the brush, until he was injured himself.

Once a third RCMP officer, Sgt. Tim Doyle, arrived on scene, he took over carrying the hiker until they met with fire services and the hiker’s friend, who had a side-by-side. The hiker was treated on scene by EHS.

When you go in the wilderness, remember to always bring a fully charged cell phone, water, food, dry clothes and advise someone of your plans. It might just save your life.
