Nova Scotia RCMP is reminding motorists and cyclists about safety

The Nova Scotia RCMP is reminding motorists and cyclists that there’s a shared responsibility when it comes to bicycle safety on our roads.

“It all comes down to safety around bikes,” says Cpl. Chris Marshall, Public Information Officer with the Nova Scotia RCMP. “This summer, we’re challenging all drivers to be cautious and to give cyclists extra space on our roads. And we’re challenging cyclists to always be aware and use proper hand signals when riding. According to the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists. And motorists are required to leave one metre of open space when driving alongside bikes; otherwise, they could face a $295 fine.

Safety tips for cyclists:

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet. It’s the law, and helmets can reduce the risk of brain damage, which is the leading cause of fatal or disabling injury to cyclists.
  • Obey all traffic rules and use proper hand signals when turning and stopping.
  • Wear a reflective vest or bright clothing so others can see you.
  • Have a bell or horn on your bike.

Safety tips for motorists:

  • Always look for cyclists, especially at intersections, and share the road by making space.
  • When entering or exiting a parking spot, watch for cyclists before opening your door or pulling into traffic.
  • Keep in mind that cyclists are much more vulnerable on the roads than those in cars.

Respecting the rules of the road goes a long way towards keeping everyone safe.
