Assault with a weapon

Police are investigating an assault with a weapon that occurred early this morning in Halifax.

At approximately 2:55 a.m., police responded to a report of a stabbing in the area of the 2000-3000 block of Gottingen Street in Halifax. Investigators located a 34-year-old man who had been stabbed. The man was transported to the QE2 hospital with what are believed to be serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Police remain on scene in the area. Investigators do not believe that this is a random incident. This matter is in the early stages of the investigation and limited details are available at this time, but there is no threat to public safety.

Police will have both directions of Gottingen Street (north and south), closed between Cogswell and Cornwallis Streets for a period of time this morning while the investigation continues. An update will be provided when the roadway is re-opened.
