All three vehicles sustained frontend damage and came to rest on the roadway, blocking the highway.
The driver of the westbound car, a 42-year-old Cape Breton County woman, and the driver of the eastbound car, an 81-year-old Cape Breton County man, suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital. The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Sydney Mines Fire Department and was showing signs of impairment. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.
