“On Tuesday we lost one our team members, Peter MacKay.

Peter was best known in HSAR as being one of the first facilitators that new HSAR volunteers met as they began core module training. He was a long-time coordinator of the Map & Compass course – the first in a series of core modules. Peter was both knowledgeable and welcoming a great ambassador for welcoming new members. His degree of patience, and his kindness meant that new members felt welcome and ensured their success on a course that some found quite challenging. His sense of humour helped keep stressed members at ease during training and searches.

Peter was competent, confident, compassionate, and committed – an excellent team member. In his over 10 years with Halifax SAR, he served in a variety of roles. He was comfortable with the administrative components of the team, where he spent time as the Assistant Chief Director. When he stepped down from that role, he maintained his attendance at executive meetings and was a frequent contributor during meetings.

From an operational perspective, he was actively involved with Search Management, helping to coordinate searches for lost, missing, and injured throughout the municipality and responding on mutual aid searches in other parts of Nova Scotia.

He did not shy away from fundraising components of the team. Volunteering countless hours with a variety of team fundraisers including helping with the Eco-Endurance Challenge, the Haunted Hollow, and coordinating a Map & Compass course for the public.

One of Peter’s largest roles on the team was as one of our project leads for the Project Lifesaver Association of Nova Scotia Peter took the lead in registering new clients and ensuring the systems were operational. He coordinated training events ensuring that members maintained the competencies that Project Lifesaver requires.

Rest easy Peter, we will take it from here. The knowledge that you imparted on so many volunteers will continue to benefit the lost, missing, and injured person for years to come.

Our thoughts are with all those that knew and loved Pete, and especially his family at this truly difficult time.
