UPDATE: RCMP charge three men in relation to homicide in Yarmouth

The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit has charged three men in a homicide that occurred in Yarmouth in May 2021.

At approximately​ 11:30​ p.m. on May​ 24, Yarmouth Town RCMP were called to a home on King St. for a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Police located a​ 41-year-old man outside the home. EHS attended, but the man succumbed to his injuries. His death was later determined to have been the result of a homicide.

James Edmund Spurrell, 33, of Yarmouth, has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder. Spurrell was already in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on other matters when he was arrested. Spurrell appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court today and was remanded into custody. He will return to Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 14, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

Gordon Jack Hein, 38, of Barrington, has been charged with Assault with a Weapon. Hein was already in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on other matters when he was arrested. Hein appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court today and was remanded into custody. He will return to Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 2, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

Herbert Spurrell, 68, of Yarmouth, has been charged with Accessory After the Fact to Discharging a Firearm. Spurrell was arrested on January 21 in Yarmouth. He was later released on conditions and will appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 14, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

The investigation continues to be lead by the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit with assistance from the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office, RCMP Forensic Identification Section, Yarmouth RCMP General Investigation Section and the Yarmouth Town RCMP.
