Chances of a white Christmas

Check out our “weather list” to discover your chances of “being blessed” by snow for the holidays. Since our weather forecasts cover the next seven days, you can get the actual forecast for Christmas Day starting on December 19.

For those who cannot wait, we have analyzed 65 years of weather records for 45 major centres across Canada, and calculated the probability of having white, snow-covered ground on Christmas Day. The table below shows the probability of having a white Christmas for some of the major Canadian cities. A “white Christmas” is defined as the probability of having 2 cm (or more) of snow on the ground at 7 a.m. on Christmas morning.

The data is based on the amount of snow-on-the-ground recorded on Christmas day from 1955-2019, from which a statistical probability can be made to determine your chances of having a white Christmas for the current year.

The entire list of all major Canadian cities is available on our website.

A “perfect Christmas” is meteorologically defined as having snow on the ground of 2 cm (or more) on Christmas morning and measurable snow falling sometime on Christmas day.

Did you know that 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracks everything that flies in and around North America? On December 24, NORAD has the very special mission of also tracking Santa!
