Police investigate suspicious death

 

The RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit with assistance from the Eskasoni RCMP is investigating the suspicious death of a 30-year-old Eskasoni man.

At approximately 5:45 a.m. this morning, Eskasoni RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death on Beach Rd. in Eskasoni. Investigators have since deemed the death to be suspicious and the investigation is ongoing.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

The investigation is being supported by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office, RCMP Forensic Identification Services and Eskasoni RCMP. The Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit is asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact them at 902-896-5060. Richmond County District RCMP investigating after home invasion

Richmond County District RCMP is investigating after a home invasion on Hwy. 4 in Chapel Island.

At 3:56 a.m. yesterday morning, police responded to a complaint of an agitated man who was possibly experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon arrival, police learned that the man had kicked in the front door of a residence and assaulted the occupants with a baseball bat. The man was arrested without incident and was held in custody overnight.

Russell Charles Battiste, 52, of Chapel Island, has been charged with the following:

  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Break and Enter with Intent – S.348(1)(a) CC;
  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Assault with a Weapon – S.267(a) CC x2;
  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Assault Causing Bodily Harm – S.267(b) CC;
  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose – S.88(2) CC;
  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm – S.264.1(1)(a) CC x3;
  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Mischief under $5,000 – S.430(4) CC x2

Battiste has been remanded into custody and will appear in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court for a bail hearing at 9:30 a.m. today.
