Well, you learn something new everyday!

Our team was able to help out the Canadian Sea Turtle Network with rescuing a leatherback turtle from the mouth of the Stewiacke River. This turtle was a far ways from it’s home in the ocean and was not going to survive the tidal waters.

Thankfully we were able to use our boat and deploy at low tide to find the turtle who seemed a bit disoriented on a sandbar that had appeared.

After some deep thinking, we teamed up with the Department of Natural Resources along with our friends at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and of course Brookfield Fire & Emergency Services. Together we were able to air lift the turtle from the sandbar and to a waiting trailer where she was trucked away and set back into the ocean. (She was estimated to weigh over 600lbs!)

The cool thing? She is now satellite tagged so we can track her adventures around the world. But the COOLEST thing? We named her “Stewie”!

Stay tuned for the adventures of Stewie, the endangered leatherback turtle who rode the tidal bore just a bit too far into our little Town of Stewiacke!
