Police issue 79 tickets for speeding and other vehicle offences

Halifax Regional Police issued 79 tickets for speeding, stunting and other motor vehicle-related offences on Monday and Tuesday.

Members from the HRP Traffic Unit issued 79 summary offence tickets: 23 for speeding; 2 for stunting; and 54 for other offences including no insurance, expired plates, failing to change lanes, tinted windows, using cell phones and speeding in a construction zone.

On May 10 at approximately 10:30 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 111 near Burnside Drive in Dartmouth. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 112 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A 38-year-old Boutiliers Point man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.

Also, on May 10 at approximately 10:45 a.m. a second vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 111 near Burnside Drive in Dartmouth. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 113 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A 21-year-old Cole Harbour man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.

In addition, the men were suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicles they were driving were seized and impounded.

We remind motorists to slow down in construction zones and be aware of temporary speed signage. In Nova Scotia, fines are doubled for drivers speeding in work zones and demerit points are also assigned to drivers’ records.

In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.
