Police issue 43 tickets for speeding and other vehicle offences

Halifax Regional Police issued 43 tickets for speeding and other motor vehicle-related offences yesterday and charged a man for stunting this morning.

Members from the HRP Traffic Unit issued 16 summary offence tickets for speeding, including the stunting charge, and 27 for other offences including no insurance, expired plates, using a cell phone and failed safety inspections.

This morning at approximately 7 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed at the bottom of the Bicentennial Highway going onto Bayers Road. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 114 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. A 40-year-old Lower Sackville man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. In addition, the man was suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicle he was driving was seized and impounded.

Officers spent time yesterday addressing traffic concerns in the Portland Street/Settle Street area of Dartmouth, St. Margaret’s Bay Road and Connaught Avenue / Bayers Road area in Halifax. A number of the tickets were issued in these areas.

In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.
