Maritime Forces Atlantic Commemorates the Battle of the Atlantic in Halifax
On Sunday, May 5, 2024, starting at 10:30 a.m., a ceremony commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic will take place at the Point Pleasant Park Sailors’ Memorial.
Every year, on the first Sunday in May, our Defence family joins with community members in memorial parks to honour those who served in the longest battle of the Second World War. Together, we observe a moment of silence to mark the sacrifice of the more than 4,500 Canadians who lost their lives in the Battle of the Atlantic, in hard-fought victories at sea, or on treacherous convoy duty.
We encourage all members of the community to join us in remembering the sailors, merchant mariners, and aviators who served and sacrificed for our country.
- Beginning at 10:30 a.m., a military parade consisting of four platoons will be marching from the Point Pleasant Park lower parking lot to the Sailors’ Memorial along Sailors Memorial Way. Although there will be no road closures, members of the public are to be advised of higher than usual foot traffic in this area.
- At 10:58 a.m., a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter will conduct a wreath drop into the Halifax Harbour within view of the Sailors’ Memorial. Royal Canadian Air Force flybys are carefully planned and closely controlled to always ensure public safety. Aircraft participation is subject to weather and operational requirements.
