HAZMAT technical training day 2
HRFE crews from the previous HAZMAT technical training course were back at Brenntag for a new scenario, putting their skills to the test.
Under supervision if HRFE training div and VIERA Fire Training, fire crews responded to a chemical spill involving a rail car. There was minimum investigation, so crews had to take what they know and expand from there.
Setting up and recon – Wind direction is key. Command set up safely away from the scene. Decontamination began to set up as crews unloaded gear and began to suit up. Drones from the TAC unit were requested to deploy and scan the scene.
Vital information was relayed back to command. A victim was spotted by the drone as well, so a medical evac was set up.
Going in – A first team of HAZMAT members, suited up for extreme exposure, enter the scene and relay information back to command.
The team find the victim and under harsh conditions begin to work.
They are informed that this victim is DOA and begin to work on securing the leaks involved with the train car and near by container. They then leave to decon and a second team moves in.
Second wave – Due to this scenario involving a fatality, a coroner will not enter a contaminated site. As documented by drone photos and eyes on from the first team, a second team is deployed for the recovery.
They enter the zone with heavy intel on what to expect but still with extreme caution. Gas readings continue to be taken and a recovery begins.
Once secured, the second team will take the victim for a thorough decontamination before the victim can be transported.
First team have already decontanimated and team two will now do the same.
Both teams will have a basic physical prior to suiting up then after to ensure they are in good health.
Decon – The decon team are suited up as well to safely do their tasking.
Setting up and tearing down their zone is done carefully and specific to the conditions, including how the wastewater after is disposed of.
Aftermath – This technical training is dealt with as if it is the real thing. With two scenarios complete, the instructors and team will now do a thorough debrief.
From set up to tear down, they will go over every step taken and a lot of information will be shared.
The HRFE train frequently for all scenarios. From first aid to high rise fires, HAZMAT to vehicle extraction and so much more, fire crews are ready to respond and continue to evolve as technology, environmental hazards, population growth and more continue to change.
