Municipality recognizing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Mi’kmaq History Month and Treaty Day
The Halifax Regional Municipality invites residents to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Treaty Day and Mi’kmaq History Month.
The Halifax Regional Municipality is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people. The municipality acknowledges the Peace and Friendship Treaties signed in this Territory and recognizes that we are all Treaty People.
Halifax City Hall will be lit in orange on Saturday, September 30 in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The municipality will also be hosting a flag raising on Friday, September 29 at 10 a.m. at Grand Parade, which will include the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Proclamation reading by Deputy Mayor Austin.
City Hall will be lit in orange on Sunday Oct. 1 to mark the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month. On Oct. 2, residents are invited to attend a flag raising ceremony taking place at 10 a.m. at Grand Parade, with a reading of the Treaty Day Proclamation by Mayor Savage.
Residents are encouraged to visit halifax.ca to stay up to date on additional events related National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Treaty Day.
Further, the municipality is advising residents of the following service level adjustments for Saturday, September 30 as a result of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours
There will be no change to municipal solid waste collection services. To ensure collection, residents are asked to place materials curbside, contained and secured to prevent access from wildlife, prior to 7 a.m. on collection day.
The Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed on Saturday, September 30. For the complete Household Special Waste program schedule, click here.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services
Halifax Transit buses and ferries will be operating on holiday service on Saturday, September 30.
The Alderney Ferry service will run at half-hour frequency on Saturday, September 30 with the first crossing will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final crossing will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m. There will be no Woodside ferry service on Saturday, September 30.
All Buses will pull over at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, for a moment of silence in memory of the children who never returned home from residential schools, survivors, and their families and communities.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services
Most municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Saturday, September 30, as well as on October 2. The Emera Oval and Sackville Sports Stadium will be open on October 2. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information.

Parking
On-street paid parking will be free on Monday, October 2. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones.
Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be closed on Saturday, September 30 for full service. Urgent calls can still be reported during the holiday. Regular operating hours will resume on Sunday, October 1 from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Alderney Gate, Bayers Road and Musquodoboit Harbour Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, October 2 and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, October 3.
