Comfort centres opened in support of those impacted by the fires in Tantallon and area – May 28, 8:50 p.m.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that comfort centres have been opened to assist residents impacted by the fires in the Tantallon area. The comfort centres are located at:

  • Black Point and Area Community Centre | 8579 St Margarets Bay Road. The comfort centre is open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Canada Games Centre | 26 Thomas Raddall Drive. The comfort centre is open until further notice.
  • Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre | 1583 Beaver Bank Road. The comfort centre is open beginning at 9 p.m. and will be open until further notice.

Residents are asked to avoid the following evacuated areas:

  • Westwood subdivision, Upper Tantallon
  • Whitehills subdivision, Hammonds Plains
  • Highland Park subdivision, Yankeetown
  • Haliburton Hills
  • Pockwock Road
  • Glen Arbour
  • Lucasville Road to Sackville Drive

Residents who are close to the fire are advised to close all windows and doors, shut down air exchangers and stay inside until air quality conditions improve. Residents who are close to the fire are also advised to monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate. Residents who are required to evacuate should bring their pets, medication and supplies for 72 hours.

The comfort centres are open to all residents who have been impacted by the ongoing fires. Comfort centres are temporary daytime accommodations where food and water are provided, as well as a place to charge devices and receive up-to-date information, when residents are impacted by prolonged power outages, extreme temperatures or other significant events.
