DID YOU KNOW? THE RELEASE OF NAMES
In order for police to release the name of an individual facing a charge, the charge must be sworn before the Courts. Only at that time does the name of the individual become public information. If the charge has not yet been sworn in Court, the person’s name cannot be released. There are also exceptions where names are not released, such as in circumstances involving youth who are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act or in matters where a publication ban may be issued by a judge.
