Dusk and dawn are risky times for many of the animals that we share our world with – these are the times when most vehicle collisions occur. In the fall, when the amount of light decreases drastically, we increase the number of cars on the road when it’s dark. According to many studies, more animals are hit by cars during the October and November months than any other time of year. This includes both large and small mammals, as well as birds – especially nocturnal hunters like owls!

Where animals are likely to be present, remember to reduce your speed and scan ahead to give yourself the best chance of stopping in time to avoid a crash. Most wildlife-vehicle collisions happen on low-volume, high-speed rural roads, which are also likely to be the areas with higher animal populations.
