Halifax Public Libraries is filling its fall calendar with plenty of engaging conversations. From September to November, over 20 Canadian leaders in social justice, academics, and the creative industries are speaking at Halifax Central Library on the important topics of our times, from healthcare equity to pandemic recovery.

“Learning happens at the Library in many different ways. Sometimes it’s a quiet space for reading, other times it’s gathering for a great conversation,” says Åsa Kachan, CEO and Chief Librarian of Halifax Public Libraries. “This fall, interesting local and national speakers will engage our community in timely conversations that matter.”

The arts, literature, and their role in our collective recovery are under examination in The Walrus Talks by a prestigious panel of professors and professionals. While a film screening of The Gig is Up is utilized as the cornerstone for a lively Canadian labour conversation.

In a 6-part event series complete with ASL interpreters, Fernwood Publishing’s roster of writers and experts will separate fact from fiction and to help us get on The Same Page.

In collaboration with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Atlantic Canada, the topic of Equity in Black Healthcare is the broad theme for a specific community conversation.

Also, in the works are significant gatherings and local main events, including an Indigenous-led symposium called Creative Counter-Memorialization; a series of discussions on housing for the Library’s Living Foundations initiative; an after-hours opening event for AfterWords Festival; and an art event for Nocturne.
