Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime charge man with murder
Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime has charged a man with murder after an incident on Pleasant St. in Kingsport.
On May 1, 2022, Kings District RCMP received a report of a murder that had occurred at a home on Pleasant St. in Kingsport on April 30. RCMP learned that a 72-year-old woman had been murdered and a 71-year-old man had attended the New Minas RCMP Detachment to report this incident and turn himself in. The man was subsequently arrested for murder and held in custody.
Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime has since taken over the investigation and is being assisted by RCMP Forensic Identification Services, Kings District RCMP and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office. As part of the investigation, search warrants have been executed at the home on Pleasant St., a hotel in Kings County and a minivan.
Douglas Andrew Smith, 71, of Kingsport, has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and appeared in Kentville Provincial Court on May 2. Smith was remanded into custody and will return to Kentville Provincial Court on June 2, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
