Whether you’re driving, cycling or walking, knowing what railway warning signs and devices mean—and how to act when you see them—is key to staying safe around railway crossings and tracks.

 

ROAD USERS

REMEMBER:

  1. Avoid distractions
  2. Be prepared to stop at all crossings
  3. Slow down, look both ways, and listen for oncoming trains
  4. Follow all railway warning signs and signals
  5. Cross at a 90° angle if crossing on a bike, as wheels can become stuck
  6. Check that there’s enough room for your vehicle on the other side of the tracks before crossing
  7. Never race a train
  8. Never stop on the tracks

PEDESTRIANS

 

REMEMBER:

  1. Stay alert—it’s easy to get distracted by phones, music, and conversations
  2. Stop, look both ways, and listen for oncoming trains
  3. Follow all railway warning signs and signals
  4. Only cross tracks at designated railway crossings
  5. Cross quickly―never stop on the tracks
  6. Cross at a 90° angle if crossing with a stroller or wheelchair, as wheels can become stuck

PASSIVE CROSSING

  1. Be extra cautious as passive crossings don’t have flashing lights or gates
  2. Be prepared to stop at all crossings
  3. Slow down, look both ways, and listen for oncoming trains
  4. Follow all railway warning signs and signals
  5. Never race a train
  6. Never stop on the tracks
