UPDATE: RCMP investigation into suspicious packages delivered to Constituency Offices

The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit continues to investigate the delivery of suspicious packages to Constituency Offices in Southwestern Nova Scotia.

Since suspicious packages were initially reported in Barrington, Yarmouth and Bridgewater on February 7, packages have been received at five Provincial Constituency Offices in Meteghan, Liverpool, Yarmouth, Kentville and Kingston. All packages were seized by police and no one experienced any adverse effects from the packages.

The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit is continuing with its investigations, gathering information and evidence. The packages to date have all been tested locally and while police have identified the presence of a substance, the substance does not contain any chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive agents. The packages are being sent to an RCMP Laboratory in Edmonton for further testing to confirm the unknown substance. The investigation continues to be assisted by RCMP Forensic Identification Services and the RCMP Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Unit (CBRNE).

Packages have been received by Constituency Offices, at all levels of Government, in areas policed by municipal police agencies in Nova Scotia. RCMP investigators are aware of these incidents and have been liaising with partner agencies where appropriate.

Anyone with information on these incidents, is asked to please contact the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit at 902-365-3160. Should you wish to remain anonymous call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips App.
