**** HSAR Release
On July 31, 2021, Halifax Search and Rescue responded to a request for assistance from Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia to conduct a remote rescue. Two hikers were on the back side of Hay Marsh Trail, part of The Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail system. One individual required assistance.
Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency initially deployed an off-highway vehicle to access the trailhead. However, due to the extremely remote and rugged location of the subject, a Nova Scotia Department of Lands & Forestry helicopter was requested to assist with the rescue. Four Halifax Search and Rescue members were deployed via helicopter to access the subject. The subject was assessed, stabilized, and escorted to the helicopter for transport from the site.
Hiking of the Bluff Trail can be very challenging. The topography of the last loop is very steep and undulating, with erratic boulders and thick bush. HSAR would like to thank the Department of Lands and Forestry Aviation Services pilots, whom we routinely work with. Their pilots routinely go above and beyond to ensure safe and efficient rescues and support subject access in some very rugged terrain. This mitigates risk to all responders and expedites time for subjects from remote areas.
